A wager Del Mar fans have asked for – the .50¢ Trifecta – will make its California debut starting October 29 when the seaside track presents its second “Bing Crosby Season” for a 20-day run through to November 29.
The “Tri,” a popular bet that requires selecting the first three finishers in a race in order, previous had been offered at the $1 level, but figures to draw even more interest with the minimum at half that price. The Trifecta is offered on every race on the card.
All told, Del Mar will present 14 different types of wagers on its programs, which have been scheduled on a Thursday through Sunday basis throughout its fall stand. The wagering gamut runs from the traditional Win, Place and Show bets all the way down to several five- and six-horse combination offerings. Additionally, Del Mar lists “guarantees” for two of its most popular weekend pools.
The Pick Six, long the most-favored multiple bet in California, will have a guaranteed pool of $100,000 for all weekend (Saturday and Sunday) cards. The $2 bet requires fans to pick the winners of the last six races on the day’s slate and can result in large payoffs. Further, there will be a guaranteed pool of $400,000 on weekends for another popular multi-bet, the Pick Four. This wager, which is offered at a .50¢ minimum, demands the picking of the last four winners on the day’s program.
Del Mar, which will be the California host site for the Breeders’ Cup on Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31, will normally offer eight races during the week and nine on weekends throughout its meet. Regular first post will be 12:30 p.m. with some exceptions, notably a special Thanksgiving Day (November 26) card that kicks off at 11 a.m.
Other wagers of note on the shore track’s roster include the .50¢ Player’s Pick Five on the day’s first five races (offering a reduced takeout rate of 14%) and the $1 Super High Five wager (requiring the picking – in order – of the first five finishers in a race) presented on the day’s final event.
