The Cary Grant Stakes, a race renamed in honor of the movie star and racing fan who appeared in more than 70 feature films from the 1930s to the 1960s, will be presented for the 41st time Saturday.

Originally named the On Trust Stakes and run at Hollywood Park, the Cal-bred sprint feature has been offered as part of Del Mar’s Bing Crosby Season for the past 10 years and will be the headline attraction on this Saturday’s nine-race program at the shore oval.

The $100,000, seven-furlong test is part of the $4.45 million Golden State Stakes series that consists of 35 stakes contested at tracks up and down the state over the calendar year. Ten of them happen at Del Mar, eight in the summer and two more in the fall.

Topping the short but select cast for the dash is William Peeples’ Big City Lights, a 5-year-old full horse by Mr. Big who has run 11 times in his career and never finished worse than third. He has five victories on his ledger and more than $440,000 in the bank and ran second in this sprint last year to the California champion The Chosen Vron, who was a back-to-back winner of the Grant.

“Lights” is trained by Hall of Fame conditioner Richard Mandella, who is an old-schooler and underlined that fact when he blew out his charge two furlongs on Wednesday of this week. Short blow-outs a few days in front of a race was a common occurrence among trainers “back in the day,” and Mandella hasn’t forgotten about it. He’s put some speed on his horse’s mind and some air in his lungs for his Saturday date.

Here’s the full field for the Grant from the rail out with riders and morning line odds:  B & B Zietz Stables’ Man O Rose (Edwin Maldonado, 8/5); Big City Lights (Kazushi Kimura, 7/5); R L Stables’ Moose Mitchell (Armando Aguilar, 15-1); Hector Castrellon’s None Above the Law (Antonio Fresu, 9/2), and Zephyr Racing or Pais’ Curlin’s Kaos (Diego Herrera, 7/2).

Man O Rose, a 4-year-old gelding by Stanford, has seven victories to his credit and more than $320,000 in earnings. He packs good speed and gets a top speed rider in a field filled with fast horses. He’s conditioned by Jeff Mullins.

Moose Mitchell, a 5-year-old gelding by Danzing Candy, ran third in the Grant last year. The bay, who is trained by George Papaprodromou, is an eight-time winner of more than $480,000.

The Grant will have a post time of approximately 4 p.m.
