Del Mar Mile Attracts Outstanding Field of 11

Quality plus quantity will be showcased Sunday when eleven runners whose specialty is competing at a middle distance on the grass clash in the Grade II $200,000 Del Mar Mile over the Jimmy Durante Turf Course.

Bowies Hero, successful in the Eddie Read Stakes, and Bolo, victorious in the Shoemaker Mile in late May, are co-highweights at 124 pounds as Grade I winners. However, they will face stout opposition from several highly-regarded rivals.

Recent stakes-winners entered include Majestic Eagle, 120, Rafael Bejarano; Bombard, 119, Mike Smith, and Grecian Fire, 118, Kent Desormeaux. Formidable as well are the comebacking What View, 118, Martin Garcia; Brazilian-bred Ohio, 122, John Velazquez, and always-tough Sharp Samurai, 120, Joe Talamo.

Majestic Eagle won the American at Santa Anita in late June, Bombard accounted for the restricted Wickerr July 21, while Grecian Fire captured the California Dreamin’ last month

Rounding out the Del Mar mile line-up are Prince Earl, 116, Geovanni Franco; El Picaro, 118, Drayden Van Dyke, and Double Touch, 117, Abel Cedillo.
