Twelve California-bred fillies and mares have had their names thrown into the hat for the 31st edition of the Solana Beach Stakes, a mile on the turf that carries a $150,000 incentive.

The race is part of the $4.5 million Golden State Stakes series that consists of 35 races offered up and down the state for California-bred runners, including eight this summer at Del Mar.

The likely favorite in the Sunday headliner is Reddam Racing’s Stay and Scam, a 4-year-old daughter of the Reddam stallion Square Eddie. The bay filly has won six races and finished second or third in six others during a total of 14 outings, banking $398,360 in the process. She’s a turf specialist – five of her wins and 11 of here starts have happened on the green – and she figures to be plenty comfortable in the feature.

Trainer Doug O’Neill has been at the controls for the filly’s career and he once again has hired on regular rider Mario Gutierrez to be the pilot. They’ll break from Post 2 in the lineup.

Alongside the favorite in Post 1 is the horse who figures to be her chief competition – Cinema Thoroughbreds, Flores or Zondio’s Tom’s Regret, a 4-year-old by Tom’s Tribute who has four victories and six seconds on her ledger. The bay flashes a bankroll that reads $373,823 and will be making her first start at Del Mar Sunday. Trainer Steve Miyadi has named Umberto Rispoli to do the horsebacking.

Though 12 horses have been named to the test, space issues will allow on 11 at most to compete. Currently Abrams, Dutko or Paran’s Ultimate Hy is listed on the also-eligible list and will need a scratch in order to draw in.

The Solana Beach will go as Race 9 on a nine-race program. First post on the day is the usual 2 p.m. and the stakes should go off at approximately 6 p.m.
