A full field of fillies and mares will sprint six and a half furlongs Thursday in what will serve as the day’s feature attraction. The race is a first-level allowance affair for California-breds and an even dozen have signed up for the event.
Favoritism in the dash may be in dispute, but a logical choice would appear to be the 3-year-old filly Taming the Tigress, who races for Nentwig, Pagano or Weiner and partners. The daughter of the speed sire Smiling Tiger comes off a handy win at Del Mar on July 30 against open company and has two other things going for her: Her rider is Del Mar’s leading jockey, Flavien Prat, and her trainer is Del Mar’s conditioning kingpin, Peter Miller. Their filly will break from Post 9 in the lineup.
An interesting runner in the lineup is Seven Sisters, who is owned by SLO Racing Stable and is trained by Andy Mathis. The bay is a 5-year-old mare who never made a start until this year, winning her third start on July 29 at Del Mar in a $50,000 maiden-claiming event. The daughter of Oxbow has shown speed in all three of her outings and can be expected to do more of that Thursday.
Here’s the complete collection of distaffers aiming for the headliner from the rail out with their riders:
Southern Comfort Stable’s Little Miss Ellie (Kent Desormeaux); Giordano, Mattias or Rodriguez’s Li’l Grazen (Tiago Pereira); Klein or Lebherz’s Miss Glorious (Joe Bravo); Howard and Janet Siegel Racing’s No Cover Charge (Kylde Frey); Tessar or Bach’s Smoothlikebuttah (Edwin Maldonado); Slugo acing or Paymastere Racing’s Wishtheyallcouldbe (Drayden Van Dyke); Seven Sisters; Jay Em es Stable’s Takethediamondlane (apprentice Jessica Pyfer); Taming the Tigress; Bell and Brewster’s Kristi’s Tiger (Umberto Rispoli); GNO Racing Club, Aldabbagh or Branch’s Mucha Woman (Abel Cedillo), and Reddam Racing’s Another Eddie (Mario Gutierrez).
Li’l Grazen, a 7-year-old mare by the popular stallion Grazen, has been a popular sort of late, having been claimed four times out of her last nine starts. She’s a steady sort who has finished in the top three in 18 of her 36 starts, including six wins. She’s in for a $20,000 tag once more Thursday and again may draw action in the claiming box.
Another Eddie, a homebred daughter of the late Square Eddie, has fired good shots in five of her six lifetime starts. She has two wins, both on turf, She ran well in her lone start at Del Mar, a sprint on August 6.
The feature goes as Race 5 on the nine-race program with a first post of 2 p.m.
