Linda Templeton – who races under the name of Templeton Horses – will send out her undefeated homebred Governor Goteven at Del Mar Friday in the Golden State Juvenile Fillies Stakes, a seven-furlong test that carries a purse of $150,000.
The stakes, one of 35 throughout the year for California-bred or sired runners worth more than $4.6 million, has drawn a field of 10 and will go as the 7th race on an eight-race card that the track will present along with the first day of Breeders’ Cup Championship races televised from Keeneland in Kentucky.
Governor Goteven, a dark bay or brown daughter of the Midnight Lute sire Governor Charlie, has raced three times in her short career and won them all, including a pair of Cal-bred stakes here this past summer -- the CTBA and Generous Portion. The quick miss was trained then by the neophyte conditioner Lisa Bernard, who was winning the first three races of her career with the filly. When she runs Friday, though, “Goteven” will be saddled by Walther Solis.
Bernard was a protégé of Solis who took over some of his horses last year while Solis returned to a role he knew well as a farm manager, this time for Lovacres Ranch in Warner Springs, home of owner Templeton. Previously, Solis had been the farm manager for John and Betty Mabee’s powerhouse breeding operation Golden Eagle Farm in nearby Ramona when it was turning out stars and winning Eclipse Awards during the 1990s.
But now Solis has returned to the racetrack and taken back the horses Bernard trained. She has taken a sabbatical to visit with family currently, but will return shortly to take up the role of assistant to her mentor.
Tiago Pereira rode Governor Goteven in all three of her tallies and will be aboard again Friday as they break from post 10 as the 124-pound topweight in the headliner. All other runners in the lineup – none of them stakes winners -- will carry 120 pounds in the sprint.
Here’s the lineup for the GS Juvenile Fillies from the rail out with riders: KMN Racing’s Starlight Stroll (Edwin Maldonado); Reddam Racing’s Eddie’s New Dream (Mario Gutierrez); Sunnyside Capital Ventures’ Dylans Wild Cat (Mike Smith); Kagele or Shaw’s September Secret (Ricardo Gonzalez); C T R Stables’ Love Wins (Abel Cedillo); Beckerle or Lovingier’s Will Take a Kiss (Tyler Baze); Slugo Racing or Paymaster Racing’s Wishtheyallcouldbe (Jose Valdivia, Jr.); Brown, Jr., Klein or Lebherz’s Super Game (Drayden Van Dyke); K M N Racing’s Okoye (Eswan Flores), and Governor Goteven.
Though none of Governor Goteven’s rivals has won stakes, seven of them have won at least one race. Notable among that group is September Secret, a gray daughter of the prolific California sire Grazen who is trained by Peter Miller. She broke her maiden at Del Mar in her second start on July 24, then subsequently won an allowance race at Santa Anita on October 17. Both of her victories were scored with top local rider Flavien Prat in the boot, but with the Frenchman off in Kentucky riding several Breeders’ Cup horses this weekend, ‘Ricky” Gonzalez takes over.
Starlight Stroll, now trained by Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer, ships down from Golden Gate Fields for the stakes. She made her lone start at the Bay Area track on October 18 for trainer Steve Sherman and was a sharp winner of maiden special race. She’s a homebred chestnut filly by the Indian Charlie sire Indian Evening.
Super Game returns to the main track and sprinting after a pair of mile starts on the turf, including a victory in a maiden special race at Del Mar on August 9. She’s conditioned by Brian Koriner.
First post Friday for the Del Mar races is, as usual, 12:30 p.m
