Longshot Miz Clubcali and rider Armando Ayuso took advantage of a fast early pace in the six-furlong allowance feature at Del Mar Friday and closed stoutly through the lane to tally by a length and a quarter and pay $50 to win.
The headliner was for California-bred fillies and mares and Miz Clubcali, owned by Zephyr Racing or Alfred Pais, turned back nine of her distaff rivals to take down the lion’s share of the $57,500 purse. The winner is a 3-year-old by the popular stallion Clubhouse Ride and trainer Antonio Garcia made a key equipment change for his bay miss when he took off her normal racing blinkers for the dash.
Finishing second in the sprint was Gary Finder’s Wishtheyallcouldbe, the 19-10 race favorite, who had a neck on third-place finisher Nene Diamond, owned by Slugo Racing.
Miz Clubcali picked up a first prize of $33,000 for her efforts and increased her bankroll to $105,140. She now has two wins and two seconds in nine starts.
Final time for the race was 1:10.36 after opening splits of :21.93 and :44.88.
Racing resumes at Del Mar Saturday with first post at 12:30 p.m.
