Providing Hall of Famer jockey Kent Desormeaux with his second straight victory of the afternoon, Magic Musketier outfinished Extraordinary Jerry in the final strides to win Del Mar’s feature race Friday.

Originally scheduled to be run over Del Mar’s infield grass course, the contest was switched to the main track because of recent rain and remained at one mile. With the switch in surfaces, six horses were withdrawn from the original 12-horse line-up.

Magic Musketier, co-owned by trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and Kenwood Racing, went to the gate at 5-1 and prevailed by a half-length over a game Extraordinary Jerry, 5-2 second choice, after rallying from last place.  Third was Zestful, with 9-5 favored Shadow Sphinx fourth.

Magic Musketier, a son of Musketier bred in Ohio, was timed in 1:37.24 over a track labeled “good” and returned $13, $5.40 and $3.20 after his third win in 18 career outings. Extraordinary Jerry paid $4.20 and $2.40, while Zestful returned $3.40 to show.

Desormeaux also won the fifth race aboard the even-money Easy Shot. The two victories moved him to within seven of the 6,000-winner milestone in his successful career.
