Nice Ice, who won a maiden race over Santa Anita’s six and one-half furlong downhill turf course in April, stretched out to a mile over the Del Mar grass to win Thursday’s feature race under jockey Tiago Pereira.
Closing resolutely in the final sixteenth, Nice Ice overhauled A Walk in the Park to win by a head in 1:35.02. A Walk in the Park, with Geovanni Franco in the saddle, was a length and one-quarter ahead of Rolling Shadow, with 2-1 favored X S Gold fourth in the field of ten fillies and mares.
Scratched were the also-eligibles – Streak of Luck, Sapphire Kid, Clearly Gone and Funny Bean.
Nice Ice, a daughter of Northern Afleet owned by Janet Lyons and trainer Brian Koriner, went to the gate at 6-1 and returned $14.40, $7.60 and $6.20 for her second win in seven starts. A Walk in the Park paid $5.20 and $4.20, while Rolling Shadow returned $7.80 to show.
