Nine veteran turf horses will hook-up Saturday in the Wickerr Stakes, a competitive overnighter that will be run for the 31st time and carry a $65,000 purse.
Likely to draw the most attention – and most betting action – in the lineup are a quartet of daisycutters headed by Victor Trujillo’s Kiwi’s Dream. Joining him on the “good shot” list are George Kirkorian’s Big Score; Hronis Racing’s Jasikan, and Golden Pegasus Racing’s Bolo.
Kiwi’s Dream is quite likely to make the lead in one-mile spin and speed, of course, is the most dangerous thing a horse can possess. His rider, Juan Hernandez, will no doubt let his horse roll from the fence and he is likely to take a whole bunch of catching.
Big Score will be making his first start in 10 months for trainer Tim Yakteen, who has name Amir Cedillo to ride. The 6-year-old Mr. Big horse is a four-time winner of over $600,000 and has been training forwardly for this return.
Jasikan is conditioned by Juan Leyva, assistant for trainer John Sadler. The 4-year-old Irish-bred will be making his initial outing in almost a year and gets Umberto Rispoli on his back for the first time. Jasikan finished third in the La Jolla Handicap here last August 4 in his most recent effort.
Bolo, an 8-year-old gelded warrior, will be looking to become a millionaire in the Wickerr. Right now the Grade I winner has $978,072 in the bank and a tally Saturday will put him in seven-figure territory. Carla Gaines will saddle Bolo and give a leg up to Jose Valdivia, Jr.
Here’s the full field for the turf test from the rail out:
Kiwi’s Dream (morning line of 3-1); New Year (rider Giovanni Franco, 20-21); Jasikan (8-1); Voodoo Song (Drayden Van Dyke, 4-1); Bob and Jackie (Heriberto Figueroa, 8-1); Bolo (5-1); Souter (Evan Roman, 12-1); Murad Khan (Victor Espinoza, 12-1), and Big Score (7/2).
First post Saturday – just as it will be for all days of the meet – is 2 p.m.
