No Silent Scores Upset in Turf Sprint

Giving 23-year-old French-born jockey Flavien Prat his third victory of the afternoon, Double HJ Stable’s No Silent rallied in the stretch to win the Del Mar feature Thursday, a five-furlong sprint over the infield Jimmy Durante Turf Course.

Taking command in midstretch, No Silent, sent postward at 6-1, scored by a length over a fast-closing Turnover, with 8-5 favored Tizcano fading to third in the field of seven runners. Withdrawn from the original line-up were Boozer and Doodetta.

No Silent, a six-year-old Silent Name gelding trained by Gary Mandella, ran the distance in 56.84 and returned $15.20, $7.20 and $3.80 after scoring his sixth victory in 22 career starts. Runner-up Turnover paid $5 and $3, while Tizcano returned $2.40 to show.

Prat, competing at Del Mar for the first time this summer, also won the second race aboard Bottle Blonde in a $38.80 surprise and the fifth on Karma King for an $8.80 payoff. He made it four wins for the day in the finale, winning the eighth race astride Vartan for a $20.60 return.

Booting in three winners Thursday was leading rider Rafael Bejarano who won the first on Sooner Time at $3.60, the fourth on Sir Cal at $5.40 and the sixth aboard L’s Choice for a $9.80 payoff.

Seeking his fourth straight Del Mar title, Bejarano now has 36 winners for the meeting, ten more than second place Joe Talamo with only four racing days remaining of the 40-day season which concludes Monday. Prat’s quadruple gave him 25 winners this summer, good for third place in the standings.

With a one-day carryover of $58,142, $286,488 was wagered Thursday for a total Pick Six pool of $344,630. There were a dozen perfect tickets and each was worth $17,974.

Thursday’s attendance was 6,111.
