Phantom Boss, winner of the Grade III Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs, will face ten fellow California-bred two-year-olds Friday in the $100,000 I’m Smokin’ Stakes at Del Mar.
Phantom Boss, a son of Shackleford trained by Jorge Periban, broke his maiden second time out at Santa Anita and then was sent to Churchill Downs where he won the Bashford Manor in game fashion as the 3-2 favorite. Regular rider Rafael Bejarano again has the call in the six furlong sprint.
Aligned against Phantom Boss, the morning line favorite, will be Shady Empire, Edwin Maldonado; Bluegrass Faith, Drayden Van Dyke; Riding With Dino, Martin Pedroza; Pas de Panique, Abel Cedillo; Club Aspen, Jorge Velez; Drippin Sauce, Mike Smith; El Tigre Terrible, Joe Talamo; Big Returns, Ruben Fuentes; Tap Back, Victor Espinoza, and Square Deal, Flavien Prat.
All of the aforementioned juveniles are winners, with the exception of Square Deal, who was disqualified from a triumph.
Post time for the first of seven races Friday will be 4 p.m.
