Featuring a 2-year-old division deep in talent, Reddam Racing LLC took the ownership titles of the 76th Del Mar Summer Meeting for both wins and earnings.
J. Paul Reddam’s stable, with main trainers Doug O’Neill and Edward Freeman, recorded 13 wins, solo or in partnership, six more than runner-up Hronis Racing and Rockingham Ranch.
With 2-year-old stakes winners Mrazek and Nyquist leading the way, Reddam Racing compiled $995,260 in earning, topping the $865,700 of B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farm, whose earnings came mainly from Beholder, winner of the Clement L. Hirsh Stakes, TVG Pacific Classic winner and Horse of the Meeting,
Reddam’s powerful 2-year-olds went on display in the Graduation Stakes on August 5, when Mrzek and Ralis ran 1-2. Ralis was eventually shipped east and won the $350,000 Grade I Hopeful Stakes on Labor Day, an excellent prelude for a victory by Reddam’s Nyquist in the Grade I $300,000 Del Mar Futurity, the closing day feature.
Reddam’s double victory ended a two-year reign by Hronis Racing LLC as the owner leaders for both wins and earnings.
