Providing jockey Joe Talamo with his third victory of the afternoon, Irish-bred Responsibleforlove sliced between horses in midstretch and overhauled Place des Vosges in the final strides to win the featured $80,980 CTT & TOC Handicap Wednesday at Del Mar.
Responsibleforlove, a four-year-old daughter of Duke of Marmalade owned by Team Valor and Rupert and trained by Hall of Famer Neil Drysdale, scored by a head over 3-1 second choice Place des Vosges who appeared to have the race won nearing the finish only to be overtaken at the wire.
Dynamic Mizzes K was third, with Kiss Me Now fourth in the field of nine older fillies and mares. Goldy Espony, the 3-2 favorite, tired after pressing the pace and wound up fifth in the field of nine. Decked Out was withdrawn.
Responsibleforlove was timed in 2:15.81 for the mile and three-eighths over the Jimmy Durante infield grass course and returned $10.20, $5.20 and $3.80 after her fourth success in ten starts. First money of $47,760 pushed her earnings to $134,879.
Runner-up Place des Vosges paid $4 and $3.20, while Dynamic Mizzes K returned $6 to show.
Talamo’s earlier winners were Time for Ebby at $46.80 in the first and Honor Maker at $23.60 in the sixth.
Flavien Prat had two winners – Lajatico at $7.60 in the third and Bolster at $13.60 in the fourth -to pull into a tie for first place in the jockey standings with apprentice Evin Roman at 22 winners each. Roman was blanked Wednesday.
