It’s known around the racetrack as “getting in a jackpot,” and it has nothing to do with winning a bet. It means you’ve found yourself in a place where you don’t want to be.
Riding ace Flavien Prat and his mount, the 4-5 favorite Raymundos Secret, found themselves in a jackpot turning for home in the feature race at Del Mar Friday, a nifty allowance race for fillies and mares at a mile on the lawn.
Despite being boxed in on the rail and having a wall of horses in front of him, Prat and his 4-year-old filly muscled up and busted out inside the eighth pole, swung out two lanes and leveled off with a rush to win a photo by a neck.
The comebacking winner – she’d last raced almost 10 months ago – covered the eight furlongs in 1:35.37 and paid $3.60, $2.60 and $2.20 across the board. She races for the partnership of Sierra Racing and Sterling Stables and is trained by Phil D’Amato.
Finishing second was LNJ Foxwoods’ Tapwater and running third was Hronis Racing’s Ellie Arroway.
The $59,500 allowance purse meant Raymundos Secret earned a first prize of $35,400 to build her bankroll to $98,971 for her fourth victory in six starts. The Florida-bred daughter of the Galileo sire Treasure Beach is no doubt stakes bound for her next outing.
The riding star for the day was Prat, who scored with three winners and moved back into a tie for leading rider with Umberto Rispoli, who was blanked on the afternoon. Both have 24 firsts after 14 days of racing.
In the Pick Six, there were 45 tickets with all six and they each paid $7,917.
The Pick Six Jackpot carryover pool into tomorrow’s card rose to $101,793.
First post for Saturday’s racing is 2 p.m.
