Under a well-judged ride by Hall of Famer Gary Stevens, Sheeza Milky Way, a 9-1 outsider in the wagering, wore down pacemaker Poster Girl in deep stretch to win Del Mar’s feature race Thursday, a mile and one-sixteenth contest over the infield Jimmy Durante Turf Course.
Always well-positioned while stalking the leader, Sheeza Milky Way rallied determinedly to score by a half-length over a stubborn Poster Girl, who was piloted by Evin Roman. Third in the field of eight older fillies and mares was Barleysugar, with Pantsonfire fourth. Beau Recall, the 5-2 favorite in a wide-open betting race, was sixth.
Sheeza Milky Way, a five-year-old daughter of Sidney’s Candy trained by Peter Eurton, was timed in 1:42.18 for her fifth win in 19 starts. She returned $20.60, $8.80 and $6. Poster Girl paid $6.20 and $4.60, while Barleysugar returned $3.40 to show.
There were no perfect tickets in Thursday’s Pick Six, so Friday’s program will feature a carryover of $39,439. Post time for the first of eight races will be 3:30 p.m.
