Hronis Racing’s Shenandoah Queen drew off in the stretch under jockey Tyler Baze to win the featured $77,700 Tranquility Lakes Stakes for the second consecutive year Friday.
Hustled from the gate to stalk the pacesetting 8-5 second choice Mended, Shenandoah Queen wore down that rival turning for home and pulled away to score by eight and one-half lengths in 1:37.85 for the mile on Del Mar’s main track.
Shenandoah Queen provided trainer John Sadler with his sixth stakes success of the summer meeting and fourth added-money triumph for her owners, the Hronis brothers, Kosta and Pete, of Delano, California. The owner-trainer combination won the Grade I $1 million TVG Pacific Classic with Accelerate a week ago.
Shenandoah Queen, a six-year-old daughter of Henny Hughes bred in Kentucky, was third choice in the wagering and paid $11.00, $3.40 and $2.80. A year ago, she won at odds of 20-1. She had been winless in eight starts subsequently.
Second to Shenandoah Queen Friday was the 9-10 favorite, Vale Dori, who broke slowly under jockey Drayden Van Dyke and was last early. She rallied in the stretch to salvage the runner-up position and pay $2.60 and $2.60. Third was Turkish Tabby returning $3.60. Withdrawn from the original field were Way to Versailles and Munny Spunt.
It was the sixth victory in 20 starts for Shenandoah Queen and first money of $46,620 increased the mare’s earnings to $212,610.
