TRAINERS NATIONWIDE NOMINATE FOR CLOSING WEEKEND STAKES
Nominations closed Saturday at midnight for the three final weekend stakes – the Grade II $200,000 Bayakoa and Grade I $300,000 Hollywood Derby on Saturday, December 3 and Grade I $300,000 Matriarch on Sunday, December 4.
Pending late mail arrivals, the racing office said Sunday morning there had been 10 nominated to the Bayakoa, 22 to the Hollywood Derby and 25 to the Matriarch with a maximum field of 14 for each of the latter two events.
More than a dozen horses have been named by prominent trainers based in the East to ship in for the races and bolster the group of accomplished runners headquartered in the West.
Chad Brown, the leading trainer in North America by earnings with nearly $22 million in purses through Saturday, and an especially strong turf contingent, has nominated three for the Hollywood Derby and four for the Matriarch. The Derby trio are Camelot Kitten and Annals of Time, the first and third finishers in the Grade III Hill Prince Stakes last month at Belmont Park, and Deeply Undervalued, winner of the Commonwealth Derby in September at Laurel.
Brown’s potential representatives in the Matriarch are Mexican Gold, Mrs McDougal, Roca Rojo and Zindaya. All but Mexican Gold were graded stakes winners in their last starts
H. Graham Motion’s Miss Temple City, fifth in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile, figures prominently in the Matriarch and Motion also has Hayabusa One, an allowance winner last month for Team Valor, for the Hollywood Derby.
James Toner-trained Grade I-winning 3-year-old filly Time and Motion makes for additional high quality in the Matriarch. Trainer Mark Hennig has nominated Strike Charmer, winner of the Ballston Spa at Saratoga in August.
Other East Coast shippers nominated include Revved Up (Derby) for Shug McGaughey; Strike Midnight (Derby) for Leah Gyarmati; Isotherm (Derby) for George Weaver; Kenriya (Bayakoa or Matriarch) for Christophe Ferland; Oscar Nominated (Derby) and Kitten’s Roar (Matriarch) for Mike Maker; Dickinson (Matriarch) for Kiaran McLaughlin and Stormy Victoria (Matriarch) for Christophe Clement.
NUOVO RECORD WORKS FOR THURSDAY’S RED CARPET STAKES
Japanese import Nuovo Record worked five furlongs on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course in 1:02.00 Sunday morning under an exercise rider, the final serious preparation for a start in Thursday’s $100,000 Grade III Red Carpet Stakes, a 1 3/8 mile turf marathon.
Head clocker John Malone had the 5-year-old mare’s interim fractions of :13 2/5, :26 flat, and :38 4/5 with a final quarter in :23 3/5. Slightly rank at the start of the work, Malone said Nuovo Record settled nicely and “looked good finishing.”
Nuovo Record, an earner of $4,933,397 lifetime, drew the inside post in a field of 10 in Saturday’s draw for the Red Carpet.
The field, from the rail: Nuovo Record (Yasunari Iwata), Arles (Joel Rosario), Swear By It (Norberto Arroyo, Jr.,) Generosidade (Tiago Pereira), Frenzified (Santiago Gonzalez), Into The Mystic (Flavien Prat), Ginga (Altair Domingos), Fresh Feline (Victor Espinoza), Dreamarcher (Mike Smith) and Barleysugar (Gary Stevens). Backintheacademy (Rito Almanza) is an also eligible.
SATURDAY WAS GOOD FOR O’NEILL ON TWO FRONTS
Trainer Doug O’Neill had a successful day at both Delta Downs and Del Mar on Saturday.
At Delta Downs in Vinton, La., O’Neill-trained Shane’s Girlfriend was a romping 13 1/2-length winner in the $400,000 Grade III Delta Downs Princess Stakes and, one race later, Dangerfield finished third in the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot.
Del Mar’s leading rider Flavien Prat was aboard both O’Neill representatives.
“We knew (Shane’s Girlfriend) had freakish ability, but you never know what’s going to happen when they ship and when it’s only the second start of their life,” O’Neill assistant Steve Rothblum said Sunday morning at Del Mar. “Flavien was just cruising in second or third when he smooched to her and (seconds later) when he looked back he couldn’t believe how far in front he was.
“Dangerfield also ran a really good race. We’re very pleased with both of them.”
At Del Mar, O’Neill owned and trained Gangster ($11.80) won Saturday’s sixth race.
NO PIZZA MAN, BUT SEVEN OTHERS ENTERED IN FRIDAY’S TURF CUP
The much-anticipated Hollywood Turf Cup title defense by The Pizza Man did not materialize. With one of the most popular thoroughbreds of recent years remaining at his Chicago base, connections citing difficulty with travel arrangements, a field of seven was entered Sunday morning for Friday’s 35th running of the $200,000 Grade II 1 ½-mile turf run.
The field, from the rail: Ralis (Mario Gutierrez), Royal Albert Hall (Kent Desormeaux), Flamboyant (Mike Smith), Texas Ryano (Joe Talamo), Quick Casablanca (Tyler Baze), Power Foot (Drayden Van Dyke) and Ashleyluvssugar (Gary Stevens).
CLOSERS – Om, Midnight Storm and Vyjack, all nominated to next Saturday’s $200,000 Grade II Seabiscuit Handicap, worked Sunday morning at Santa Anita. Om went four furlongs in :50.00, Vyjack six furlongs in 1:14.40 and Midnight Storm six furlongs in 1:15.00 … Selected works from 15 on turf Sunday: Quick Casablanca (4f, :48.80), Nuovo Record (5f, 1:02.40) and What a View (5f, 1:01.60).
