Tink's Twirl Prevails in Del Mar Feature

Tink’s Twirl, second choice in the betting at 7-2, took command in the stretch under jockey Jamie Theriot and went to score a decisive triumph Del Mar’s feature race Thursday, a one-mile grass contest for older fillies and mares.

Tink’s Twirl, a daughter of Twirling Candy conditioned by Del Mar’s leading trainer this summer, Phil D’Amato, scored by a length and one-quarter, with Shazara second, one length in front of third-place Midnight Swinger, the 2-1 favorite, in the field of nine runners. Lookinforadanger was scratched.

The winner, owned by Agave Racing Stable and Wilke, stepped the mile in 1:36.45 and returned $9.80, $5.80 and $3.80 after her second victory in five starts. Shazara paid $10 and $4, while Midnight Swinger paid $3.40 to show.

Tiago Pereira and Kent Desormeaux had riding doubles. Pereira won the first on My Farmer at $37 and the third aboard Gio’s Lady for a $24.40 payoff, while Desormeaux’s winners were Vibe, $3.20, in the second and Twisted Rosie, $7.80, in the sixth.
