Km Racing Enterprises’ Touching Rainbows sped to the lead from the gate under jockey Flavien Prat and never was seriously threatened in winning Del Mar’s featured event Thursday, a six-furlong sprint for older Thoroughbreds.
Touching Rainbows, a son of Aragorn trained by Phil D’Amato, Del Mar’s leading conditioner thus far this summer, scored by two and one-quarter lengths over the 3-2 favored The Street Fighter who closed well to be runner-up.
A distant third was Coils Gold who was involved in a major jam breaking from the gate troubling four of the seven runners, including fourth-place Overcomer. Stewards viewed videotape of the break but took no action.
Touching Rainbows, a strong second choice at 8-5, returned $5.20, $3 and $2.40. The Street Fighter paid $3 and $2.20, while Coils Gold returned $2.80 to show. Time for the distance was 1:09.46.
Prat also won the day’s second race, aboard Warm Endowment at $3.80 and now has 16 victories this season, three fewer than leading rider Evin Roman who for the second straight day was blanked.
Thursday’s eighth and final race was won by R Sunday Surprise, a full sister to 2016 Horse of the Year California Chrome, the daughter of Lucky Pulpit and Love the Chase breaking her maiden on her eighth attempt. Israel Ocampo was aboard and R Sunday Surprise paid $16.40 for her success on the grass.
